The Science of CBD
Dr. John Hicks
Dr. John Hicks discusses how CBD (Cannabidiol), (small doses-5mg/day) can help PREVENT inflammation and anxiety; re-modulate the immune system; support GI issues like IBS & Crohn’s; affect chronic and acute pain; support the aging process; help exercise performance and recovery; reverse ischemic injury (stroke) and more!
Why Cannabis works
Cannabis, as those of us in medicine like to call it, works because our bodies actually produce CBD-like (2-AG) and THC-like (Anandamide) molecules. CBD and THC are the two most known and researched cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. And it just so happens that the CBD-like molecules ‘2-AG’, and the THC-like molecules (Anandamide) are produced in our body to create homeostasis, to keep the body chemicals and systems balanced. These molecules are produced and used up on an hourly basis by the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS is the most pervasive regulatory system in the body – it balances and modulates all the other 12 systems in the body. The ECS regulates pain, perception to pain, metabolism, mood, behavior, blood sugar and more. The ECS is the MASTER REGULATOR and CBD happens to up and down regulate (turn on/off) almost 2,000 gene expressions. THC turns on/off under 50. This is why CBD is such a powerful medicine on its own. We normally do not need THC to “activate” CBD. CBD works on its own for over 200 disease states, symptoms and conditions.
When the Endocannabinoid System is imbalanced, we must supplement the body with cannabinoids from the plant, called phytocannabinoids, (CBD, CBG, CBN, THC, etc). We now know that the cannabis plant contains over 800 different bioactive chemical components including cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. It is speculated that the body may produce other cannabinoids in addition to our CBD-like (2-AG) and THC-like (Anandamide) molecules.
Here at Green Alley, we promote CBD from the hemp plant, and only CBD products that have a full spectrum of molecules, including other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. We even find products that preserve the chlorophyll, lipids and phenols!
The Endocannabinoid receptors
CBD stands for cannabidiol, one of the most prevalent chemical compounds in the cannabis plant, second only to THC. The hemp plant (vs the medical marijuana plant in dispensaries) has only CBD in it and is naturally non-psychoactive and LEGAL in the United States (contains <.3% THC) So CBD can come from the mmj or the hemp plant. CBD from the hemp plant is legal and sold online; CBD from the mmj plant is legal in CA and only sold in dispensaries. Clear as mud, right?
CBD is primarily extracted from the hemp plant in oil or crystal form or kept in its flower state . It can be used topically, taken orally through drops, vaporized to smoke, or cooked into edibles. Hemp also provides nutrition that is tough to find elsewhere from just one source, such as essential amino acids and Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids.
